Bipolar dual citizen rates Hugh Morgan as ‘psychopath’

Morgan, were you born an asshole or did you work at it your whole life? From The Age:

Morgan rates dual citizens as ‘bipolar’

BUSINESS leader Hugh Morgan has called for dual citizenship to be outlawed, comparing it to having a mental illness.

In a speech at Deakin University last night, the prominent Liberal Party supporter and former Business Council chairman said a person with dual citizenship had “at least the beginning of a bipolar disorder”.

Mr Morgan said citizenship was one of the most important elements of personal identity and would have a bearing on Australia’s survival as a nation.

“I am convinced that if we took Australian citizenship seriously, we would not tolerate this bipolarity. If you are an Australian then that should be the end of the matter,” he said.

“If your loyalties are to another country and Australian citizenship is merely a convenience, then you should hand in your Australian passport and feel content that your loyalties and your passport are in accord one with the other.”

It takes a genuine psychopath- who really doesn’t know the difference between his ass and a hole in the ground- to claim that dual nationality is akin to a mental illness.

Speaking of holes in the ground, Morgan is the same rich twat with many financial interests in mining, who opposes Australia’s participation in the Kyoto Protocol. Fatcat Morgan unsurprisingly thinks global warming is a furphy. Some measure of sociopathy or psychopathy is required to reckon that mining profits trump the destruction of the global environment.

I’m a dual national- a citizen of both the USA and Australia. I vote in both countries and of course can travel freely between them and work in either. Never have I had conflict of interest as a result of being a dual citizen- and I’ve had around 10 years to think about it.

When America finally declares war on Australia, I suppose I’ll have some choices to make, but probably not before.

I agree. What a stupid comment by Morgan. What is this, North Korea? Communist Russia? Nazi Germany? Citizenship is simply a legal state of being. It has nothing to do with identity of loyalty.

Taken to its logical conclusion Morgan’s statement means that all the aussies working in the UK, for example, should be recalled or shot as traitors to the nation. We’re citizens of the world. Just because Morgan is too insecure to find his own identity as opposed to clinging to outdated notions.

Succinctly put, Alex. Citizens of the world is accurate, but dinosaurs like Morgan really don’t want to know that nationalism is a dead dog. I worked that out around 10 years ago. I qualify for a couple more passports and may yet exercise those options in the near future just to prove a point.

The democratisation of information and communication by way of the internet was the last nail in the coffin for nationalism. It’s a lot harder to fear and loathe people you actually know- and via the net, it’s all too easy to strike up a conversation with just about anyone, anywhere these days.

What disappoints me the most is Morgan’s complete and dismissive ignorance of bipolar disorder. His use of the syndrome name to support his ill-thought (indeed featherheaded as you portray) ideas regarding dual citizens is right up there with the common misconceptions about schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder.

I think Morgan is more a sociopath than a psychopath, though. You can get lightweight opinions like his from any pissed idiot in a pub.

I never considered getting my Greek citizenship as I am an Australian, not until Hugh Morgan inspired me to do so. I pay taxes, I was born here, and Greece, not unlike Israel, has the right of return. Maybe Hugh should worry about getting rid of the Union Jack from Australia’s flag – if that’s not bi-polar what is?

First thing I’ve heard all week that made me laugh out loud. Good one, Fotis. 😀

They don’t call us antipodeans for nothing.

Since I seem to be the lucky last, answering rather late as I am and using all the considerations mentioned above, I would say that yes we definitely are citizens of the world, and as is noted within many international companies, who attacks one’s own colleagues and allies?
I already have English, thus Euro citizenship, and am now (having lived here since 1969 and naturalised in ’82) Australian, which I highly value (guess who I root for.)
Since my father was Russian I am about to have a go at them too!
I strongly favour several nationalities and making the world safer is a primary reason in my opinion. Maybe if we can get more ‘multinationised’ Iranians, Iraqis and Syrians, we could all feel more secure about Christian/Muslim conflict. I say this because, in my humble opinion, the most likely BIG war (as opposed to the many ‘little’ ones that continue to this day) is between those religions; ridiculous that we should be subject to the superstitions of religious sects, but regretfully true.
As for the Aussie flag, why do we still suffer the Union Jack as part of it? Surely we should be well past such ‘legacy’ rubbish, such nostalgic silliness.
Major countries such as South Africa and Canada have their own flags, why shouldn’t we? Or are we to remain lumped with such tiny countries as the Cayman Islands, Cook Islands and South Georgia?
