US peace activist Scott Parkin - image: ABC TV via smh.com.auMy old mate Philip Ruddock, the renowned lying sack of shit, will not comment on why a US citizen in Australia on a 6 month visitor’s visa has been detained.

Scott Parkin was granted a visitor’s visa back in June, at which time his character would have been assessed by ASIO. Clearly, there were no concerns at the time which would have contraindicated a visitor’s visa grant to Parkin, yet his visa was revoked by DIMIA on the improbably vague basis that he represents a threat to national security.

In the 6 weeks since Parkin has been in Australia, he has participated in a non-violent protest against the war on Iraq (specifically at an anti-Halliburton protest in Sydney, at which no arrests were made) and has also been conducting classes in non-violent civil disobedience in Melbourne.

Parkin was arrested last Saturday at a Melbourne cafe by Australian Federal Police on orders of DIMIA, which will not comment upon the actual reasons why Parkin has been detained. Parkin is being held in solitary confinement at the Melbourne Custody Centre and is being charged about $130 per day for the pleasure.

The SMH reports:

"Greens leader Bob Brown says Mr Parkin may have been arrested for political reasons on orders from Washington, because of the American’s history of activism against US military contractor Halliburton, which has close ties to US Vice President Dick Cheney."

High profile refugee advocate Julian Burnside, QC says that Parkin’s detention may well be an abuse of power, but that as a result of the application of anti-terrorism laws, the government may be under no obligation to actually state why Parkin has been detained.

HoWARd and the lying sack of shit want you to believe that their outrageous ‘anti-terrorism‘ laws are indeed directed at those scary brown people, when in fact, they want to use these laws to suppress peaceful political dissent in Australia, not to keep Australia safe from terrorism.

Well, Mr HoWARd and Mr Ruddock, take this message loud and clear: I am a dissenter. I am implacably opposed to American and Australian military involvement in Iraq-  and I am an American in Australia.

Come and get me, you bastards. Being arrested in a purportedly free society for one’s peacefully expressed political beliefs is a badge of honour one can take to the grave with pride.

Bah, didn’t we learn that the ‘patriot’ act was a complete sham to force people into modern slavery and a new age dictatorship? Obviously not, so we had to go and implement our own version didn’t we?

It is such a shame to see Australia being ruled by a fear campaign and people having this attitude of “if you have nothing to hide, then why are you worried” that is such a faceless argument. Might as well install security cameras in our houses then? I mean if we have nothing to hide then what’s the problem with someone monitoring us 24hrs a day then being able to barge into our house, put us in jail for 2 weeks and not even tell us why! Democracy wins.

At least I have never believed in the practicality of democracy, people laugh in the face of socialism and communism and their impracticality while they don’t realize how impractical democracy really is. Look at the American democratic system. It is a joke.

Apollyon, don’t forget the tracking devices, and the prohibition against telling people what’s happened to you.

This isn’t about protecting national security, it’s about protecting the status quo.

Flash, this one deserves some postage stamps.

Kerry Nettle is making noise about this. She deserves backup. Letters of concern should go straight to HoWARd.

I hope Parkin elects to fight this. His political concerns just got a lot bigger than Halliburton and quite accidentally create a major domestic issue for some Australians.

The arrest sets a precedent and sends a clear message: “Don’t get involved in politics in Australia if you’re not a citizen.”

Permanent residents of Australia beware- with the arrest of Parkin, the Australian government has demonstrated that it will crush your dissent with your deportation. Even being a citizen isn’t any guarantee that this fucking gestapo mob at DIMIA won’t deport you.

Funnily enough, I have to echo a recent Aus govt TV ad campaign: “There’s never been a better time to become an Australian citizen.”

There’s never been a better time to become a New Zealand citizen.

How the hell can a pacifist be a security threat?

Larry, when the F.A.G. tells us, we’ll all know.

Comment by weezil 09.14.05 @ 7:24 am

The real reason is that Ruddock doesn’t know why they are keeping this lad locked up … they will have to ask him nicely.
