Why? Could it all be to attract enough votes to win government, but once in the catbird seat, to enact more progressive policies?<\/p>\n<p>Ross Gittins ponders the purpose of Labor&#8217;s <em>prima facie<\/em> centrist nonsense in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/articles\/2007\/10\/23\/1192941064156.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap1\">op-ed piece<\/a> in todays&#8217; SMH.  Could KRudd be a silent socialist waiting to pupate? Is Garrett poised to pounce on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wilderness.org.au\/campaigns\/forests\/tasmania\/gunns_proposed_pulp_mill\/\">pulp mill<\/a> once out of shadow ministry? Maybe. Maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>Forgive me, but even with Labor&#8217;s crushing poll lead, I still can&#8217;t bring myself to fully trust the &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/main.jhtml?xml=\/news\/2007\/10\/21\/woz121.xml\">unemployed diplomat who speaks Chinese<\/a>&#8216; nor even consider an increasingly likely Labor landslide as a sure thing. Even if it&#8217;s essentially a done deal (and with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/news\/NATIONAL\/Newspoll-brings-bad-news-for-Howard\/2007\/10\/22\/1192940986586.html\">58% to 42% ALP lead<\/a>, it&#8217;s hard to consider it anything else), I want nothing to do with Labor mimicking  centre-right &#8216;New Labour&#8217; or &#8216;Clinton Democrats.&#8217; Australia has been given away to HoWARd&#8217;s fatcat mates- and the balance of power has got to be shifted back to Australian working people.<\/p>\n<p>Did you catch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/reslib\/200710\/r193750_733568.asx\">Peter Costello on the 7:30 Report<\/a> last night? Combative, arrogant, smirking- to the point of putting people offside who had their TV on mute. Anyone as desirous of power as Costello shouldn&#8217;t be allowed anywhere near it. Yeah, you betcha- I want to see a Swan-Costello debate. Bring on the <a href=\"http:\/\/abc.net.au\/news\/stories\/2007\/10\/23\/2067041.htm?section=justin\">worm<\/a>.
