{"id":460,"date":"2007-11-24T08:05:42","date_gmt":"2007-11-23T22:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/machinegunkeyboard.com\/?p=460"},"modified":"2007-11-24T09:29:16","modified_gmt":"2007-11-23T23:29:16","slug":"which-australia-do-you-want","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/machinegunkeyboard.com\/?p=460","title":{"rendered":"Which Australia do you want?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com.au\/maps\/mpl?moduleurl=http:\/\/voteaustralia.googlepages.com\/election.xml\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/machinegunkeyboard.com\/blogimages\/voteaus_googlemap.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Australia I want:<\/p>\n<ul>* Has IR policy which is fair to both <a href=\"http:\/\/machinegunkeyboard.com\/?p=260\">workers<\/a> and employers and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfmeuwa.com\/cfmeuwa\/health\/920\">protects<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfmeuwa.com\/cfmeuwa\/health\/929\">worker<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfmeuwa.com\/cfmeuwa\/health\/929\">safety<\/a> as a top priority<\/p>\n<p>* Respects natural <a href=\"http:\/\/www.australianreview.net\/digest\/2007\/election\/nicholls.html\">human rights<\/a>, both inside and outside Australia, respects international law and participates in the UN in good faith<\/p>\n<p>* Helps <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/news\/opinion\/the-aboriginal-intervention-policy-is-failing\/2007\/09\/17\/1189881428729.html?page=fullpage\">Aboriginals<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/articles\/2005\/jan2005\/disa-j15.shtml\">disabled citizens<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wel.org.au\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=175&amp;Itemid=111\">sole parents<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacific_Solution\">migrants\/asylum seekers<\/a> who cannot help themselves, never attacking or demonising them for political gain<\/p>\n<p>* Recognises abuse of alcohol and other drugs as a health problem, not a legal problem and thus supports drug and alcohol <a href=\"http:\/\/nsw.greens.org.au\/policies\/drugs-and-harm-minimisation\">abuse policies based in medical and psychological evidence<\/a>, not religious or moralist belief<\/p>\n<p>* Is accountable to the voters through <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.smh.com.au\/newsblog\/archives\/freedom_of_information\/index.html\">cooperation with our existing FoI laws<\/a>,  elimination of &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/mediawatch\/transcripts\/s1738366.htm\">conclusive certificates<\/a>,&#8217;  and <em>real<\/em> commitments to ministerial responsibility<\/p>\n<p>* Never suppresses political expression with paramilitary or other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/news\/National\/Renewed-calls-for-APEC-police-inquiry\/2007\/09\/19\/1189881578900.html\">excessive and unreasonable force<\/a><\/p>\n<p>* Never acts for self-perpetuation over the interests of the Australian people through any means, <em>especially not<\/em> through <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sbs.com.au\/worldnewsaustralia\/pm_condemns_bogus_leaflets_distribution_136077\">covert<\/a> nor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/mediawatch\/transcripts\/s2054150.htm\">overt<\/a> state-sponsored racism, nor by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/7.30\/content\/2003\/s923769.htm\">allowing corporate donors to purchase political favours<\/a><\/ul>\n<p>The Australia I have had since I got off the plane in Sydney in 1996 has an extraordinarily poor record on all of the above. This is not the character of the place I thought I was going to. I became an Australian citizen in 2003 to have some input on our national priorities.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m off to the polling station now.
