Reasons to add to the repertoire of choice

I was listening to The Health Report presented by Dr. Norman Swan on ABC’s Radio National.  His topic was RU486 – Some possible side effects and his guest was Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Harvard Medical School in Boston and Director of Obstetrics at Massachusetts General Hospital – Michael Greene.

This was a very informative discussion between an Australian Doctor who may one day (again) have a patient who would benefit from RU486 and a Professor who is familiar with research involving the outcomes of more than a million RU486 users in the world.

"Many women say it (RU486 procedure) feels quote “more natural” unquote, many women say they feel under more control if you will. And then many women prefer to be able to just receive this medication from a physician in a physician’s office rather than having to go to what’s identified as an ‘abortion facility’ or an ‘abortion clinic’." -Professor Greene.

It was my kind of program – long on evidence and short on belief.

Unfortunately the Australian government has not prioritised the need for a broadening of choice for Australian women and a conscience vote is not likely until the new year.

But ‘pro-lifers’ don’t want it to feel more natural. They want women to suffer as much as possible during what is already a tough time. That is the compassionate people that they are.

    J,
Perhaps it’s just oppression. Perhaps they have an overactive, all encompassing ‘need to breed’ switch. Perhaps they have never just fucked. Perhaps they believe that a woman has no rights. Perhaps they don’t leave the house.

Whatever the reasons, Australian women are ignoring them and continuing to demand their right to reproductive choice.

It was a good program, very informative and interesting.

Anti-choicers are intent upon throwing up any possible roadblock to women who want a right to choose how to operate their own bodies. From blocking RU486 to mandatory “counselling” prior to a woman being able to obtain a termination, anything goes in this religiously based interference with a fundamental and natural human right.

I find it endlessly bewildering how it is that just because a person buys in to a pack of faerie tales, that person suddenly has the right to tell other people what to do with their bodies. If a woman doesn’t subscribe to belief-based garbage, why should she be subject to belief-based laws, as the anti-choice mobsters would have them written?

Until Australia implements sharia law, witch burning and rape as a legal punishment, religion will belong in churches, mosques and synagogues, not in public laws.
