One stands, one kneels…
Prime Minister HoWARd had the numbers and Costello didn’t. Costello is not a man who settles for less and recent interviews show that he gets tetchy…
“Doesn’t matter what I feel, that’s the outcome, and that’s the important thing. This has been resolved. It’s been resolved so that everybody knows where they stand. We’re going into an election probably within 12 months and the good thing is that we all know where we stand. And that’s the best thing that we could hope for. The party can now buckle down for the election and I certainly can get on, hopefully, in future press conferences without having to face barrages of these questions over and over again.
I’m not going to go into my expectation, it doesn’t matter what my expectation is. What counts is what his intention is, and you’ll have to ask him his intention.” -Peter Costello
A kneeling treasurer, will it work?

Costello never had the numbers to make a proper leadership challenge. The more I look back on this PR wank, the more I think Howard wanted to draw media attention away from AWB, etc.

Oh, for the downfall of HoWARd I now hope. Perhaps those redistributions in his electorate may bring that about – even if the Libs stay in power. Probably hoping too hard though. Labor now needs to focus on one thing and one thing only – IR.

Absolutely Dave!
Listening to the Labor party of late (Smith and Beazley) has me hopeful that they have fine-tuned their strategy for the coming election.
Having said that I want them to completely scrap WorkChoices.

Fuck me, I’m bored by all this Howard-Costello shit. The trick is to get the government into a position where neither Howard, Costello, Nelson or Uncle Tom Cobley can save them. Labor’s opposition to Work Choices may be a goer but Labor won’t, can’t win under Beazley. Smith and Swan are overrated in terms of their ability to spark a flame that will set the nation on fire and burn down the current government.
Let’s focus on what sort of Australia we want and how best to get there. The inadequacy of not only the current government but the dead wood in the “opposition” will become more obvious through this process. I’m tired of seeing weaknesses in this government open up and nobody stepping forward to exploit them, and move the stale debate to more challenging terrain.
