Hack me an iRiver
Monday December 05th 2005, 12:53 pm

iRiver H10 20Gb beside standard sized mouseI really enjoy Radio National– well, most of it. Some of it drives me ’round the bend. To take advantage of RN’s podcast services, I decided to pick up an MP3 player. Since RN MP3 files are huuuuge- often 25-30 megs- I chose the iRiver H10 with a 20Gb hard drive so I can have several weeks worth of programs on hand. I can now pick & choose the best of RN and listen when I want to.

Suki also loves RN- particularly Phillip Adams. She’s got an iRiver T30 with 1Gb flash memory. Flash memory isn’t as battery hungry as a hard drive; the T30 runs a week on a single AAA rechargeable battery. My near vision is pretty poor, so I need the H10’s larger colour LCD. I also like the H10’s BIG built-in battery which recharges when connected to the USB port. This hefty battery accounts for the rather large and clunky form factor of the H10, but it will go about a week on a single charge as well. Better yet, anyone with a Torx driver can replace the battery, unlike most iPods.

Unfortunately, I have some gripes about the H10. For starters, it won’t work with Windows 98SE, which I use on three of the four computers on my LAN. The H10 requires Windows Media Player 10, which only runs on XP. I hate XP with a purple passion, but I’ve bitten the bullet and built a temporary XP volume on a spare HDD to try it out. The T30 works fine with 98SE. Connect it to the USB and the T30 iRiver T30 1Gb (about 50mm long)dutifully pops up as a removable hard drive in Explorer, making file management a snap, even without the iRiver provided file management application. My H10 won’t appear as a hard drive in XP unless started in "Emergency Connection" mode.

I’m a bit of a technerd, with about 30 years experience as an electronics techo. I’m looking for techie details about the H10. It looks like it could be hackable. I’d like to change some of its basic operations.

The H10 desperately needs a progressive ‘fast forward’ function (so does the T30). As provided, if you hold down the FF button, it only jumps about 5 seconds at a time. For Radio National programs, which are 30-60 minutes long, this is not useful if you’re looking to get to the middle of a program. I would like the FF to jump in 5 sec increments when the button is held for 5 sec, then jump in progressively larger increments the longer the button is held down. This would make it much easier to quickly search through longer programs.

The maximum volume output level in the H10 is far, far too low. I’m sure that the low output limit is set as a result of legal concerns for the makers of audio players about hearing damage from long term exposure to high outputs, but the top limit is so low that the player can’t be heard if there’s much background noise around the listener (i.e. common city street noise). I’d like to raise the max output level to suit.

Would also like to see if I could add the capacity for the H10 to play videos, perhaps MPG and WMV.  It already can display JPG and GIF files. The file lists are clear and readable, but the wallpaper images are cheezy plus. I would like to make my own background images for the thing.H10 display, actual size (38mm wide)

What I know so far about the techie guts of the H10 is that it is based around a PP5020 processor, which also happens to be used in the ‘4th generation’ iPods, including Mini and Photo. There’s firmware and software developer’s kits available for the PP5020. I’ll download those and have a play with the H10’s firmware and software.

Any hints & kinks about hacking the H10 are very welcome.

UPDATE: Considering I could not get the iRiver H10 to work as advertised with Win XP, it’s gone back to meet its maker… permanently.

Why is it that every MP3 player is riddled with idiosyncracies? My Creative Zen Touch is great (I hate Apple for their hatred of bloggers and control-freak zeal, so I would never buy an iPod), but I wish I could fast forward within tracks. Having to wait through Bruce Shaprio (who is great) in order to re-listen to a story is a slight chore. Oh well, nothing’s perfect.

BTW, I know you can load the Linux kernel on iPods – could the same thing be possible with yours? There’s no shartage of player hacks out there. Also, I think the volume issue is very common in MP3 players. I read a Wired story a while back about amplifiers you can buy specifically for MP3 players – I’ll try to find it for you.

I have all the LNL podcasts going back to May on my MP3 player. How geeky of me, on so many levels…

Ben, I think some particular software makers have for so loong gotten away with selling broken products that they promise to fix later, that computer users are half-accustomed to finding glitches in new techietoys.

I’m really fairly annoyed with the iRiver. I’m giving serious thought to returning it and picking up one of these no-name MP3/MPEG-4 video players at Aldi. Only $29 more than the iRiver, no hacking required… and works with Win98SE, I’m told.

Ben,
Proudly geeky (or should that be Gladys) with you 🙂

I gave up on the flaming iRiver. We’ll see what the no-namer looks like in a couple of days.

“iRiver H10 to work as advertised with Win XP” – Really? I’m a proud owner of the iRiver H10 5gig (Rosie) and I’ve had no problems. I too am boycotted Steve Jobs and his shitty internal radio-less iPods.

Mushie, true! XP would not recognise the H10 (this one was a 20Gb, but I don’t think that matters). I had to use “Emergency Connection” mode by holding down the “o” key while powering up while the thing was connected to the USB port.

iRiver specifies that XP SP1 with Windows Media Player 10 should be able to connect to the player. No go, at least for me. I even upgraded XP to SP2 to see if that was the problem. Didn’t fix it.

I spent almost 14 days frittering around with the H10/20Gb… that was enough effort. Let’s hope the next player I try is a bit more cooperative.

It’s really quite annoying when the cheaper iRiver T30 is so much easier to use. It’s not like iRiver can’t do it correctly.

I’m guessing that you didn’t have the same probs I did. What version of XP do you have?

I am with Suki and yourself about ‘Radio National’, perhaps.

Sorry to change the subject, slightly. We have a fantastic national broadcaster that is danger of becoming,’Christian speak’,Australia. Have listened as this major, secular, asset has been watered down, slowly.

Used as an experiment for podcasting, but suspect, it is being quietly castrated because most of the people who work there, are a little too bright and the station has far too much reach around the country.

Joe, dunno what you mean. Of all the things I have not seen taking over RN, it’s religion. Yes, there’s several programs which are primarily occupied with religion (i.e. The Spirit Of Things), but no individual religion appears to have undue influence over RN material. You get as much Buddhism as Anglicanism on RN.

Point me to what you mean, please.

Comment by weezil 12.08.05 @ 1:27 pm

Yeah – I’m not clear on your point either Joe.

And Suki – thanks mate, geek on!

More clearly then. The a.b.c board ,is being slowly stacked,in my opinion. When you get Dr Peter Jensen ,Anglican archbishop of Sydney, sermonising over four nights, for four weeks under, the “Big Ideas” banner you start to wonder.

Comment by joe2 12.09.05 @ 5:11 pm

joe, I see your point, but that’s more the exception than the rule. There’s little doubt that morons like Janet Albrechtson will have an influence- and it can’t be good. Why on earth would you put someone in charge of an organisation who has long advocated dismantling said organisation?

Mind you, the ABC listenership is not entirely powerless. The last time they really tried to stuff it up, me & 20,000 other Friends Of The ABC were on the steps of the Opera House, raising holy hell. Worked, as I recall.

Set Advenced/Study_Mode to 180sec – fast clicks FF make 180sec jumps.

krzy, thanks for the note… but the H10 went back to the shop. 2 weeks screwing around with it was enough. I’ve replaced it with an off-brand pocket multimedia player… which works fine with Win98. It also has a progressive fast-forward function. Wheeee-hoo!

Have a look at this thread, they’ve got a lot of good development going on over there, including the ability to change the background images.

Thanks for the tip, Dave. I’ve already returned my H10 to the shop for a refund due to difficulties described above, but perhaps other H10 owners will find those tricks handy.
