Robert Fisk is the Middle East correspondent for The Independent. Fisk is based in Beirut and has been reporting from the area for almost 30 years. Few people, much less journalists, are better placed to know and tell the real stories of armed struggle and politics from Lebanon, Israel, Iraq and the greater region.
Author, journo and blogger Antony Loewenstein, now a member of the board of Macquarie University’s Centre for Middle East and North African Studies, has scored a real coup in organising a Fisk lecture.
Fisk will speak at Macquarie University, based on his latest book, The Great War of Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East.
The details:
What: The Great War for Civilisation Revisited by Robert Fisk
When: Friday March 10th, at 7:30pm
Where: Mason Theatre, Building E7B,
Macquarie University, Balaclava Road, North Ryde.
Parking: Free. Use the University car parks (normal restrictions won’t apply)
Further information:
For attendees: (02) 9850 8869For media comment: Dr Andrew Vincent (02) 9850 8825.
Listeners of Philip Adams’ Late Night Live already know that Fisk is a riveting speaker. Fisk last appeared on LNL on 9 February 2006, addressing the Danish cartoons controversy. (LNL MP3) Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Fisk speak in person.
Major kudos to Antony Loewenstein for pulling this one off!

I’ve heard Fisk on LNL, is there any chance of him appearing in Melboring?
Comment by cfsmtb 02.21.06 @ 8:37 amHiya cileo, I don’t know if Fisk will be travelling to Melbourne this time around.
However- it’s your lucky day!
Fisk has granted permission for me to digitally record and podcast his 10 March lecture. It will either be downloadable from here on mgk or on Jon Fox’s Fourth Estate Radio.
Will let you know. 🙂
Comment by weezil 02.21.06 @ 8:56 amFantastic. Look forward to the podcast. Thanks for the effort.
Comment by douglas 02.21.06 @ 3:57 pmNo worries, douglas. I’m very much looking forward to hearing Fisk, myself.
Foxie & I have already sorted the technical matters around the recording. We’re hoping to get a feed off the house PA system. Will be good in case there is a Q&A session after Fisk speaks. You should be able to hear the audience members’ queries as well as you can hear Fisk.
Hope you enjoy the podcast. 🙂
Comment by weezil 02.21.06 @ 4:03 pmBy the way, you can also download past Fisk lectures and interviews from the audio section on his website.

Comment by weezil 02.22.06 @ 10:18 pmHey Weez.. any chance you can mention the Stolenwealth Games to Mr Fisk?
Comment by kakariki 03.02.06 @ 11:30 amkakariki, we’ll see if I can get a word in edgewise.
Antony notes that enough interest in the lecture has ben demonstrated that they have moved the venue to a larger facility and will have video links to smaller venues across the Macquarie Uni campus.
I reckon Fisk is going to be a busy little beaver. 😀
Comment by weezil 03.02.06 @ 11:47 amI can’t get enough of The Great War for Civilisation. Having lived as a particpant in some of the Iraqi history mentioned I find myself mesmerized with and in agreement with Robert Fisk’s literary narrative of our present war for civilisation. After reading it I think of the final lines in Heart of Darkness…………”the Horror……….the Horror” as being applicable to our present circumstances.
Comment by John Fletcher 03.15.06 @ 2:03 pmI can’t believe Fisk is coming to my university his articale “Let us rebel…” changed my life.
The only modern writer to do so.
