A SMH story from 30 September says, “…George Bush, fighting to avoid becoming a lame duck president…” Not possible.
A ‘lame duck’ is an officeholder who is is ineligible for re-election. The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution prevents a person from being elected to the US presidency more than twice. Shrubya can’t ‘fight to avoid becoming a lame duck president’ because he already is one. King Decider I has been a ‘lame duck’ since his (purported) re-election in 2004.
A one-term US president can be a lame duck for the period between being voted out of office in the November of an election year and the following January when the president-elect is inaugurated.
The condition of being a ‘lame duck’ US president is notable as the officeholder will have few motivations or limits on their behaviours based in pleasing the electorate. Lame duck presidents seem to issue a lot of pardons on their way out the door, as Clinton certainly did. Lame duck presidents often find it difficult to obtain support for legislation they favour and are often treated like nuclear waste by Congress.
